one of the big reasons is the fact your records when you're active duty in the defense department are kept under a totally different, incompatible system from your records when you are in the v.a., once you're a veteran and when you are out. today, that particular problem changed, maybe. today the defense secretary chuck hagel announced that the pentagon is going to get a whole new huge system for its computerized medical records. that is in part because of the hope that the new system might integrate better with the system over at the v.a. now, the pentagon had just considered dumping their own system and adopting the v.a. system for the defense department so everybody would be on one big system and there would be no issue with integration, but when they looked into it, they decided, no, let's build our own new thing instead. maybe that will help the backlog, maybe it will set it back even further, but it's an enormous change that will affect millions of americans. watch this space.
